About the Event

The Italian Studies Program in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (MLLC) in collaboration with the Center for Sport Capacity (CSC) at Brock University has invited Paul Stalteri and Carmelina Moscato to speak to the students of Italian Canadian Studies and the community on sports industry in anticipation of the Summer Canada Games in Niagara. Stalteri and Moscato will focus on their own careers, the access of their trainings to coaches and managers in the different phases, and the path they took to lead them to national and international levels. This event has been sponsored by Brock-Canada Games Teaching and Learning Grant.

OUR SPEAKERS

Paul Andrew Stalteri is a Canadian former professional soccer player. He was born to an Italian father and a Guyanese mother in Etobicoke, Ontario. Stalteri was a frequent starter for the Canadian national team for over ten years since his national debut in 1997.  He spent most of his professional career in Germany. He currently serves as an assistant coach for York9, a Canadian Premier League (CPL). 

During his professional career in Europe he played for Werder Bremen, Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham FC and Borrussia Mönchengladbach.  Stalteri made 56 appearances for Tottenham and scored three goals.  While on loan to Fulham FC, he played an additional 13 Premiership matches.  He has played 170 Bundesliga games for both Werder Bremen and Borrussia Mönchengladbach. Bremen.  He went on to score in this game, making him the first Canadian International to score in the Bundesliga.  His success continued on in the Bundesliga when Werder Bremen was crowned Bundesliga Champions and German Cup winners in 2003/2004. 

Carmelina Moscato is a Canadian soccer player and an Olympic bronze medalist. She was born in Mississauga, Ontario to Sicilian-born parents. She began playing soccer at age four and made her Canadian U-20 national team debut at age 16 in 2001 after an appearance in the Canada Games in 2000. Moscato attended Pennsylvania State University from 2002 to 2005, assisting Penn State in winning Big Ten regular season championships and appearing in two College Cup semifinals.

During her professional career, Moscato was a member of Team Canada’s historic bronze medal winning soccer team in London 2012. She has participated in three FIFA Women’s World Cup teams (2003, 2011 & 2015). She was the head coach of the U15 Canadian National Team that won silver at the 2016 U15 Concacaf Championships as well as an assistant with U20 National team in 2018 and 2020. She was also a Canadian Soccer REX talent manager from 2017-2018.  Her professional playing career ended in 2016 in Australia where she played for Western Sydney Wanderers in the W-League. She also played professionally for clubs in Italy and Sweden. She was appointed as Technical Director for the Kleinburg Nobleton Soccer Club in Ontario, Canada for seven months in 2019, before she joined Canadian Soccer Business as the Manager of Women's Professional Football Development. She acts as an instructor/facilitator for Concacaf and is a UEFA A License Coach.
